Lund University recently hosted a week-long (May 12–16, 2025) training program for professors and researchers from the Western Balkans, held under the framework of the 1FUTURE Project. Academic representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro participated in this capacity-building initiative, focused on advancing education and research in key sustainability and risk-related domains.
Throughout the training, participants engaged in thematic sessions, interactive simulations, and interdisciplinary discussions addressing:
- Green Finance
In-depth analysis of sustainable finance mechanisms and the political, social, and economic challenges surrounding green investment practices. - Risk Perception & Communication
Critical reflections on how risks are perceived by various stakeholders, the role of effective communication strategies, and governance models that enhance societal resilience. - Preparedness Simulations
Hands-on scenario planning and risk assessment exercises aimed at strengthening institutional and community-level preparedness. - Degrowth Economics
Thought-provoking discussions on alternative economic models, including the conceptual foundations and practical implications of degrowth strategies.
Sessions were hosted across several of Lund University’s interdisciplinary hubs, including the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS) and the Division of Risk Management and Societal Safety, exemplifying a collaborative, cross-sectoral approach to addressing complex global and regional challenges.
This training is another milestone in the 1FUTURE Project’s commitment to building academic excellence in the Western Balkans. By equipping university staff with the latest methods and tools, the project supports the development of strong educational and research ecosystems that can contribute to sustainable development, climate resilience, and informed policy-making across the region.
