In a joint effort to address pressing environmental challenges, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tirana hosted a workshop focusing on Education, Policy Development, and Awareness in Climate Change (CC) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM). The event, held in the Conference room of the Faculty of Economics, gathered academics, policy experts and students to discuss Albania’s path within the EU agenda. This workshop discussion was organized within the framework of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, under the project “The Europeanization of Public Policies in Albania (EPPAL)”
The workshop started with a welcome and an introduction to the agenda by Professors, Perseta Grabova, from Faculty of Economics and Juliana Marko and Meljana Bregu from the Faculty of History and Philology, coordinators of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence at University of Tirana. Exploring into the core themes, Professor Elona Pojani provided an overview of Education and Awareness activities in CC and DRM, highlighting the Faculty of Economics, University of Tirana’s initiatives.
Gledis Gjipali, Executive Director of the European Movement Albania, then presented some importation information on the EU Integration process and its implications for Albania. The discussion further deepened as Etleva Bajrami, Deputy Dean for Learning, Student Activities, and Communication, outlined the future students’ activities and research path of the Faculty of Economics towards EU issues and DRM in Albania.
Mirela Kamberi, Coordinator of National Communications for Climate Change at UNDP Albania, and Adisa Bala, Director of Disaster Risk Management at the National Agency of Civil Emergencies, led a discussion on the pathways for Policy and Awareness in CC and DRM. Of particular significance of the discussions of both experts was the focus on the job market within the field, as well as initiatives that higher education institutions should undertake to strengthen research, capacity-building activities, and awareness-raising efforts. With a spotlight on EU integration policies regarding Chapter 27 and the advancement of Albanian businesses in sustainability and climate action, the workshop served as a platform for advancing discussions on environmental resilience and policy development.
The workshop concluded with a summary of key insights and the announcement of Next Steps and Future Initiatives. Moreover, participants, including the students of the Master of Science in Risk Management, engaged in a Networking Reception, fostering connections and discussions among students and professionals. This networking opportunity was particularly beneficial for the Master of Studies in Risk Management students, providing them with a platform to interact with experts and explore potential career paths within the field of risk management.
